This Body is back and excited to share the premier of our new outdoor performance. “This Body /re/turns” adapts work made for the screen during lockdown by Sara Roer and Diane Tomasi for an in-person show in Prospect Park. With Covid cases again on the rise, we are well aware the pandemic is not over. Forced to pivot from in-person performances to on-screen showcases, our outdoor performance, “This Body /re/turns,” pivots again on how we show our work and engage our community.

Menarca at Under Exposed
by Alessia Palanti
Performers: Alessia, Sara, & Diane
Menarca, a term meaning first menstruation, grapples with the relationship between menstruation and disordered eating. The loss of menstrual cycles, amenorrhea, is one of the physical symptoms of disordered eating, and it has lasting detrimental effects on one’s health. Although many women dread their period, its return can be a sign of recovery. But sometimes its return is simply the illusion of a victory against what is an enduring psychological condition. The piece casts a trio performing vignettes that dramatize bodily and mental experiences through repeating dance phrases, acrobatics, gesture, and theatricality. Menarca is informed by biographies and interviews with affected individuals. The piece encourages conversation in order to ease a stigma that is particularly damaging in the dance community.
